Learn Optimist sailing
TODA in conjunction with sailing clubs & centers have assisted over 150 young Tanzanian sailors compete in over 21 worldwide competitions, including: The Optimist World Sailing event (in over 20 countries), the African Championships (in over 10 African Nations) with many then moving onto participate in the Laser World Championships.
2025 Optimist African Championship – Tanzania
The 2025 Optimist African Championship was proudly hosted in Dar es Salaam, bringing together young sailors from across Africa and invited nations for five days of exciting and competitive racing on the Indian Ocean. Organized by the Tanzania Optimist Dinghy Association (TODA) in collaboration with the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club (DYC), the event highlighted skill, resilience, friendship, and outstanding sportsmanship among the continent's emerging sailing talent.
We extend our sincere thanks to all sponsors, partners, volunteers, officials, and the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club (DYC), whose support, cooperation, and commitment contributed significantly to the success of the championship. Your collective efforts played a vital role in delivering a world-class event and creating a memorable experience for sailors, coaches, and supporters alike.
The championship concluded with a celebration of achievement, unity, and the bright future of youth sailing in Africa. It also marked a proud moment for Tanzania as host nation, showcasing the country's ability to organize and deliver a major international sailing event while inspiring the next generation of African sailors.

TODA in conjunction with sailing clubs & centers have assisted over 150 young Tanzanian sailors compete in over 21 worldwide competitions, including: The Optimist World Sailing event (in over 20 countries), the African Championships (in over 10 African Nations) with many then moving onto participate in the Laser World Championships.
In the 2024 Optimist African Championship team racing event held in Seychelles, Tanzania claimed the bronze medal, finishing third behind Angola and South Africa a historic achievement after years without a podium finish. Our sailors demonstrated exceptional teamwork and determination.
